This is NOT a happy post – so even if it's uncomfortable, please READ and share!
The majority of Australia has been suffering from severe drought over the past years (driest year on record in Alice Springs) and currently MASSIVE areas are on FIRE 🔥🔥🔥. .
Our heart goes out to all affected ❤Over 20 people have died in the fires, over a 1500 homes have been lost and close to half a billion animals were killed so far with species assumed to have gone extinct or nearly extinct. And yes – it’s not over yet. .
We are all in this together and all of you who have been fortunate enough to visit our country and all of you who are currently here or planning a visit – please take notice of what’s going on and support your “dream destination” regardless where you are right now. .
There are many ways you can help from monetary support up to hands on local help (see list below).
Even though lots of us are still in denial we are all contributing to climate change, no matter how we choose to live and nobody's perfect. As hostel owners our existence is based on travel and tourism and we are well aware that this industry still has a lot of potential when it comes to sustainability. However we are trying to make a difference wherever we can. .
As for you: If you’re currently travelling or planning to do so – do so consciously. Please THINK TWICE when booking tours, accommodation and purchasing food and clothing as YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Book direct (accommodation, tours…), shop local, choose eco-friendly activities and maybe do one thing less but support the operators which are trying to support and sustain nature and wildlife. .
Travelling shouldn’t be about saving money and getting bargains, it should be about experiencing our beautiful planet, about supporting the local communities, about education and awareness so you go home and try to contribute to a healthier planet while living your daily life – even if it’s just small things like a keep cup when going out to get your morning coffee. .
